Downloaded the Garmin after Muncie....with the good and bad.
Downsides:
- Swim - could never find the rhythm in my stroke . . . for some reason I kept veering right, and I kept getting running into other swimmers. There was also a quarter mile run after leaving the water and before going through the chip counter mat/machine (whatever it is called).
- Run - I was expecting to run about nine minute miles (finishing the run in 2 hours). My HR was relatievely whole time (ran at 145 - 150), so that was good . . . but my body just kept saying "walk." My question . . . have either of you seen that same kind of issue in the heat where your body is saying slow down even with relatively low HR? I'm assuming the heat would contribute to this but wondered your take.
- Heat - It was 90+ °F. During the run, I was asking myself why in the world I signed up for an IM. Fortunately Mont Tremblant, shouldn't be super hot. I'm praying that you guys have a cooler day in Louisville. Heat sucks.
Upsides:
- Crushed the bike - 21.4 mph is the fastest I have EVER ridden, so I'm proud of that. I rode between 145 and 150 HR, so I know I could have even pushed this a little more.
- Decent transitions - T1 was fast, and T2 was fine considering I sat on the ground to put on socks and stopped in the portajohn.
- Nutrition - Started the day with coffee and part of an energy bar. 30 minutes before swim I ate a Roctane. On the bike I used mainly Perpetuem and Endurolytes and it seemed to work well although I got hungry towards the end of the bike and downed a Clif Bar I had on board with me. On the run I ate two small bottles of concentrated Perpetuem which worked well again. I also took in some Coke and Gatorade on the course.....and of course LOTS of water.
Last thought - Didn't love my clothing choice. I wore a one-piece yesterday which I love because my shorts don't ride down . . . but I struggled with the sun and have a burn today because the sunscreen wore off at the perimeter of the one-piece around my shoulders (even after reapplying at T2). I need to figure out something else before Steelhead especially if I need more coverage because of the sun.
